26 JANUARY 2024 | TOWARDS STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE EMBASSY OF CANADA AND THE NCIP
The Canadian Embassy Political Officer, Mr. Peter Wright, together with Ms. Tewari Sejal visited the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples to coordinate and discuss measures relative to the implementation of projects through the Canada Fund for Local Initiative (CFLI) for Indigenous Communities.
The Embassy of Canada seeks to strengthen its programs with identified local partners to especially with legitimate Indigenous Peoples Organizations and Indigenous Political Structures. Inquiries were also raised with regard to the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) process as essential to the self-determine development of Indigenous Peoples in Ancestral Domains.
In response, Chairperson Jennifer Pia Sibug-Las has directed the creation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) to be lead by the Foreign Assisted Programs and International Relations Office (FAPIRO) to facilitate the coordination and ensure diligent response to concerns.
Moreover, the Chairperson manifested the intent to institutionalize the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both organizations.
Also present during the meeting were FAPIRO Director, Ms Dahlialyn Dait-Cawed, Office on Empowerment and Human Rights (OEHR) Director, Ms Catherine Gayagay-Apaling, Representatives from the Ancestral Domains Office (ADO), and the Office of the Chairperson (OC) Chief of Staff, Ms Christine Faith Sabella.
