17 May 2023 – The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) convened for an introductory meeting for the Energy Transition Partnership’s (ETP’s) Just Coal Transition Platform (JCTP).
UNOPS representatives shared the JCTP overview and its components which advocates for a holistic approach toward fostering exchange of insights and sharing of experiences of identified Southeast Asian countries, designing mechanisms, and provisions of technical assistance for Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs), with different local and international partners.
The Platform supports energy transition in the coal regions in Southeast Asia and provides coordination of the just transition programs for the stakeholders standing to be affected by coal-phase down. The Platform facilitates needs assessments, global learning, and connects stakeholders with resources to enable a fair and just transition.
In response, the NCIP highlighted the mandate of the Agency and apprised the body of existing national guidelines and processes for the promotion and protection of IP rights. Programs/activities/projects (PAPs) and other initiatives of the Commission for the ICCs/IPs were also discussed.
The Foreign-Assisted Programs and International Relations Office (FAPIRO) led the discussion with the Office on Policy, Planning, and Research (OPPR), Office on Socio-Economic Services and Special Concerns (OSESSC), Office of Empowerment and Human Rights (OEHR), and the Ancestral Domains Office (ADO).
Areas of collaboration were identified ensuring genuine consultations and efforts towards recognition, respect, promotion, and protection of IP rights.
