NCIP PARTICIPATED IN DEPED LANGUAGE AND INCLUSION SUMMIT
19 May 2023 | National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) participated in Language and Inclusion Summit (LIS) of Department of Education (DepEd) at Marriott Hotel, Pasay City.
Aligned with MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa Agenda, the LIS theme, “Promoting Diversity, Inclusivity, and Equity for All Filipino Learners” envisions true realization of inclusion in education by placing premium on the richness of our language and celebrating diversity of the Philippines.
NCIP Chairperson Capuyan participated in the Panel Discussion of Cultural Presentation; he suggested to include capacitating Indigenous Cultural Community/Indigenous People (ICCs/IPs) Youth of their rights in Indigenous Peoples Education’s (IPEd) Curriculum empowering them in the process.
During the Panel Discussion, the Chairperson appreciated collaborative efforts of NCIP and DepE towards IP children in the country and encouraged National Government Agencies (NGAs), stakeholders, and the international community to join collaborative programs and projects to uplift the lives of ICCs/IPs Youth.
The event was also an opportunity for the Chairperson to introduced the cultural values, virtues, and customary laws of ICCs thru the Project Epanaw Phase I, II, and III Coffee Table Books (CTB). The Chairperson Capuyan expressed support for the promotion of first language-based multilingual education, inclusion and literacy, and Mother Toungue Based – Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) in IPEd.
Present in the venue were various national and international institutions like the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), Philippine Deaf Resource Center (PRDC), Institute of Islamic Studies – University of the Philippines (IIS-UP), United States for International Development (USAID), USAID – Gabay RBI, Summer Institute of Linguistics(SIL)-Philippines, Save the Children Philippines, ABC+ USAID, among others.
Likewise, in attendance were Senator Loren B. Legarda, and Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian.
The Department of Education spearheaded the LIS, under the leadership of Vice President Sarah Z. Duterte.
To cap the summit, Chairperson Capuyan provided 3 sets of CTB of Project Epanaw Dr. Gina O. Gonong, DepEd’s Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction.
